- An outside micrometer, also known as an external micrometer, is a precision measuring tool used to measure the outer diameter of an object with high accuracy. It is commonly used in machining and manufacturing to ensure that the diameter of a workpiece is within a specific tolerance.
- The outside micrometer consists of a frame, an anvil, a spindle, a thimble, and a measuring face. The anvil is a stationary flat surface, and the spindle is a movable rod with a measuring face on the end. The thimble is attached to the spindle and rotates when the spindle is turned, allowing the user to make precise measurements.
- To use an outside micrometer, the user places the workpiece between the anvil and the measuring face of the spindle and applies pressure to the micrometer's thimble, causing the spindle to move towards the workpiece. The user then reads the measurement on the micrometer's scale and thimble, which are marked in increments of 0.001 inch or 0.01 millimeters, depending on the model.
